Town of Holden Beach Fire & Grilling Regulations
Grills and other cooking equipment can quickly ignite decks, siding, railings, overhangs and other combustible materials. Proper placement and supervision are essential.
📏 Grill Clearance Requirement
All grills should be located at least 10 feet from any part of a structure while being operated or while still producing heat.
Grills should not be operated on decks or underneath combustible overhangs, stairs, balconies or similar portions of a structure.
🚫 Keep Grills Off Decks
Do not operate a grill on a wooden deck or other combustible portion of a structure. Move the grill to a safe location away from buildings and combustible materials.
🏠 Maintain Safe Clearance
Keep grills at least 10 feet from walls, siding, railings, stairs, balconies, overhangs and other portions of a structure.
👀 Never Leave It Unattended
A grill should be continuously supervised while operating. Keep children, pets and combustible materials away from the cooking area.
🧯 Be Ready for a Fire
Keep an appropriate fire extinguisher or another suitable means of extinguishment readily available while grilling.
♨️ Hot Charcoal & Ashes
Charcoal and ashes can remain hot enough to start a fire for many hours. Never place hot coals or ashes in plastic trash containers, dunes, vegetation or near combustible materials.
✅ After Grilling
Make sure burners are turned off, fuel supplies are secured and charcoal is completely extinguished before leaving the grill unattended.
Move everyone to a safe location and call 911. Do not place yourself at risk attempting to extinguish a rapidly growing fire.
Cooking devices and open- or closed-flame devices are not permitted in public areas or on private dunes in Holden Beach.
🏖️ No Beach Fires
Do not build fires or operate grills, fire pits, cooking devices or other flame-producing equipment on the beach strand.
🌾 Protect the Dunes
Cooking and flame-producing devices are prohibited on private dunes. Dune vegetation and nearby structures can ignite and spread fire rapidly.
🔥 Open Burning
Open burning is prohibited within the Town of Holden Beach except where specifically permitted by Town ordinance.
🪵 Recreational Fires
Recreational fires are permitted only when confined within a container manufactured specifically for that purpose and when otherwise allowed by Town regulations.
🎆 Fireworks
Fireworks are prohibited on Holden Beach except as allowed under current Town regulations. Check current Town guidance before using any sparkler or other pyrotechnic device.
💨 Wind & Dry Conditions
Coastal winds can cause fire and embers to spread rapidly. Never use outdoor fire equipment when conditions make safe operation questionable.
⚠️ Recreational Fire Containers Do Not Override Other Restrictions
The recreational-fire container provision does not authorize grills, cooking equipment or flame-producing devices in locations where they are otherwise prohibited, including the beach strand, public areas and private dunes.
Move to a safe location and call 911 immediately.
