Brunswick County Solid Waste Ordinance (Article 3, Section 1-11-47) Key Rules:
  1. 100-Foot Proximity Prohibition: In unincorporated Brunswick County, open burning of yard waste or refuse within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling is a violation of county ordinance and enforced by Community Enforcement (910-253-2200).
  2. Recreational Fire Exception: Campfires, outdoor cooking fires (grills), ceremonial fires, and fires solely for human warmth are permissible within 100', provided clean firewood is used, smoke does not create a nuisance to neighbors, and no temporary burn ban is active.
  3. NC Forest Service Jurisdiction (>100'): Burning of natural vegetation more than 100' from an occupied dwelling is governed by the NC Forest Service and requires a free state permit.
  4. Land-Clearing Regulations: Land-clearing operations (uprooting trees/vegetation for development) require dedicated NC Forest Service and NC Division of Air Quality permits.
  5. Continuous Attendance: Any permitted fire must be constantly attended by a competent adult with an active water hose and tools until fully cold out.
